The H in her name may be silent, but Marinah never has been. She’s a true alchemist of empowered and empowering songs. And after more than a decade at the helm of Ojos de Brujo and almost ten years flying solo, with three albums that further expanded her sound, Marinah has now released “Heroinas”, an album with the prestigious American label Nacional Records with a manifesto of polyphonic sisterhood and domestic heroism.
The heroines found on Marinah’s new album don’t need the spectacular nature or the epic features of Marvel films. These heroines live on Earth, at street level, without the need to climb skyscrapers with a cape. Heroines who keep on fighting for equality in an unequal world and heroines who, as in this repertoire, add necessary narratives to the sound and message of the increasingly homogeneous contemporary music scene.
With collaborations from global artists such as La Dame Blanche, Rocío Márquez, Niña Dioz, Nakany Canté, Flávia Coelho, Brisa Fenoy, Tribade and Sombra Alor, what’s new about the worldwide star of fusion music doesn’t just tune in with her own sound, but she turns it, as she sings in one of the songs, “into one and many more: into the seed of freedom”.
